BSF Enterprise (LSE:BSFA), the life sciences group developing tissue engineering and cellular agriculture technologies, said its wholly owned subsidiary 3D Bio-Tissues has received a Notice of Allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office for patent application number 18/578,286.
The patent, titled "Cell culture medium and supplements for corneal and skin cell culture," covers proprietary formulations using macromolecular crowding agents in serum-free and reduced-serum media, with all 17 examined claims approved for issuance.
It is the second US patent allowance 3D Bio-Tissues has secured in recent months, following a Notice of Allowance last month for a separate "Collagen Production" patent covering methods that use the ETSYL peptide to stimulate collagen production in cells.
BSF said the new patent will, once issued, provide proprietary protection in the United States, which it described as the world's largest market for biotechnology and commercial biomanufacturing, and will support milieu.bio, the Group's commercial consumables subsidiary.
milieu.bio, formerly Cultivated Meat Technologies and renamed following its October registration at Companies House, markets CityMix and CytoBoost media supplements to life-science and bioprocessing customers including Seawith, and sells under licence from 3D Bio-Tissues, which earns a royalty on external sales.
BSF said the underlying technology also covers skin fibroblast culture and extracellular matrix synthesis protocols used by Lab-Grown Leather, and could be transferred into Kerato to expand its tissue engineering pipeline alongside its LiQD Cornea hydrogel programme.

"The allowance of this patent in the United States represents an important commercial and legal milestone for BSF Enterprise," said Dr Che Connon, chief executive.
"Importantly, this outcome shows our hub-and-spoke model at work. 3D Bio-Tissues continues to act as an IP generator, developing defensible innovations that drive commercial revenue through milieu.bio and, once issued, shielding the specialised pipelines inside Lab-Grown Leather and Kerato," he said.
Connon added that the company's ambition is for milieu.bio to become "a leading global provider of cell-culture media additives."
