Smith+Nephew and Imperial College launch surgical robotics centre

Smith+Nephew, the global medical technology company, has launched a five-year research partnership with Imperial College London aimed at accelerating innovation in robotic surgery.

The centre embeds Smith+Nephew engineers directly alongside Imperial researchers, departing from the traditional model of companies licensing technology from universities after the fact.

It marks the first time Smith+Nephew has founded a centre inside a university, and Imperial's first industry centre in medical technology.

At full scale, it will support a senior postdoctoral researcher and up to seven fully funded PhD studentships recruited over the five years.

Research will target markerless registration and tracking, removing the pins and rigid markers current systems bolt to bone, and computer vision that reads and adapts to a patient's anatomy in real time.

The goal is robotic surgery that is less invasive and usable beyond specialist centres.

"This centre establishes a third route to patients: academic engineers working hand-in-hand to help develop products with a major industry partner," said Professor Rodriguez y Baena.

Vasant Padmanabhan, Smith+Nephew's President of Research & Development for ENT and Emerging Markets, said the centre has "the potential to move research into operating theatres at pace."
