Exploration news dominated the mining tape, with Sunrise Resources delivering standout zinc-lead-silver assays in Nevada and Pensana confirming fresh funding from its Qatar-backed partner Cascade. Glencore's Australian listing ambitions added a corporate-strategy angle to a session otherwise led by drill results, while Thor Explorations and Galantas Gold both advanced their respective gold projects.

Sunrise Resources fires high-grade zinc hits at Reese Ridge

Sunrise Resources (AIM:SRES) has reported further high-grade zinc, lead and silver assay results from its Reese Ridge project in Nevada, with narrow vein samples at the Ridge Top Prospect grading up to 9.9% zinc, more than 20% lead and 192g/t silver. The AIM-listed explorer said geological mapping and sampling had strengthened confidence in the project's potential, helping to define drill targets ahead of a planned campaign, and the shares jumped 17.857% to 0.0165p on the update.

Mineralisation was also confirmed in the rock surrounding the high-grade veins, with a 3.3-metre footwall chip sample grading 5.8% zinc, 1.0% lead and 17g/t silver, and a hanging wall sample returning 4.8% zinc. Sunrise is now building a three-dimensional geological model that integrates the mapping with historical geophysical surveys, aiming to prioritise targets across both the near-surface vein system and a deeper conductive anomaly.

"Our objective is not only to drill test the down-dip continuity of the high-grade surface mineralisation but also the large conductive geophysical anomaly at depth, which we believe could represent a large sulphide system," said Patrick Cheetham, executive chairman of Sunrise Resources.

Cheetham's comparison of the project's setting to carbonate replacement deposits, pointing to South32's Hermosa project in Arizona and i-80 Gold's Ruby Hill discoveries in Nevada, signals ambitions well beyond a narrow vein play. The scale of that thesis, however, hinges entirely on funding: the next phase, additional ground geophysics followed by drill testing, is explicitly conditional on capital being secured, meaning today's re-rating reflects promise rather than proof.

Glencore eyes Australian listing after bumper earnings

Glencore (LSE:GLEN) confirmed plans to seek a secondary listing on the Australian Securities Exchange in October, targeting inclusion in the benchmark ASX 200 within 12 months, as it reported an 86% jump in first-half earnings and unveiled an additional $1.5 billion of shareholder returns. Shares were flat at 573.5p, up 0.03%, as the market absorbed both the results and the geographic pivot.

Chief executive Gary Nagle said Australia offers "a deep pool of capital, with deep knowledge of the mining industry," pointing to strong interest already shown by Australian funds. The move follows failed merger talks with Rio Tinto earlier this year and an abandoned attempt at a US listing last year, positioning the ASX push as Glencore's latest effort to widen its shareholder base after two setbacks elsewhere.

An Australian listing brings Glencore closer to one of the world's fastest-growing pension pools and a shareholder base fluent in mining economics, potentially making its equity a more natural fit for consolidation talk than either the failed Rio Tinto approach or the shelved US listing managed to achieve. It also reframes the earnings beat and buyback as part of a broader campaign to make Glencore's paper more attractive across multiple capital markets simultaneously.

Pensana shares rise after Cascade funding update

Pensana (LSE:PRE) shares rose 16.914% to 78.8p after the company confirmed it has received $15 million to date of a planned $165 million investment from Cascade Natural Resources, with $150 million still outstanding. The funds are earmarked for continued development of Pensana's Longonjo rare earth mine in Angola.

Cascade, led by Lloyd Pengilly, told Pensana it remains in high-level talks with its backer, the State of Qatar, and that a second tranche is due shortly. The company attributed the delay partly to Qatar's growing strategic focus on critical minerals and to an expansion of the proposed investment beyond the original mine-development plan, now stretching to Pensana's mine-to-magnet downstream strategy and a planned Nasdaq listing. Chief executive Tim George is in Doha meeting Qatari investors this week before travelling on to Washington.

Chairman Paul Atherley welcomed the broadened scope of the commitment: "We welcome the expanded Qatar backed Cascade investment, in particular the support for the U.S. Mine to Magnet strategy and the NASDAQ listing." The widening of Qatar's ambitions beyond simple mine finance toward a US-listed, downstream magnet strategy suggests Pensana's backers see Longonjo as a platform play rather than a single-asset bet, even as the bulk of the headline $165 million remains unfunded.

Thor Explorations extends high-grade gold zone beneath Segilola pit

Thor Explorations (LSE:THX), the Nigeria-focused gold miner, said diamond drilling beneath its Segilola open pit has intersected further high-grade gold mineralisation that remains open at depth, with the shares adding 3.94% to 58.0p. Standout results included 1.2 metres at 11.31 grammes per tonne of gold from 288 metres and 2 metres at 9.27g/t from 420 metres, extending a steeply dipping ore shoot to 400 metres below the pit.

"We are extremely pleased to report these drill results which demonstrate the continuation of high-grade mineralisation beneath the Segilola pit," said Segun Lawson, president and CEO. The company is running four owner-operated rigs to test along-strike and down-plunge extensions as it works toward a decision on underground mining, building on a 2018 preliminary economic assessment that outlined an underground resource of 28,000 ounces at 9.4g/t indicated plus 90,000 ounces at 7.9g/t inferred.

With a mining consultancy now engaged to assess underground options, Thor is moving from resource confirmation toward a development decision, a step that could extend Segilola's mine life well beyond the current open-pit plan and reshape the economics underpinning the stock's valuation.

Galantas Gold clears key permits for Andacollo restart

Galantas Gold (GAL) shares edged up 2.22% to 23.0p after the company secured key permits clearing the way for a restart of its Andacollo project. Robert Sedgemore, senior vice president of operations, said "these approvals represent a major milestone for the project," underlining the regulatory significance of the clearance.

The permitting green light removes a major hurdle that has stood between Galantas and renewed production, positioning the company to move toward restart activity now that the approvals overhang has been resolved.
