Essentra (LSE:ESNT), the global manufacturer of essential components and solutions, posted first-half revenue of £166.1m, up 9.8% on a constant currency basis and 9% at actual rates, against £152.4m a year earlier.

Like-for-like revenue growth reached 7.8%, with all three regions returning to organic growth: EMEA up 8.9%, the Americas up 5.7% and Asia-Pacific up 7.8%.

Adjusted operating profit rose to £18.1m from £16.5m, lifting adjusted operating margin to 10.9% from 10.8%, while adjusted basic earnings per share climbed 21.3% at constant currency to 4.3p.

Net debt excluding lease liabilities stood at £70.7m, up from £68.7m a year earlier, equivalent to leverage of 1.6x adjusted EBITDA following completion of the Boteco acquisition in June, which strengthens Essentra's position in machine building and automation markets.

Adjusted cash conversion came in at 79%, with management expecting stronger conversion in the second half to support its full-year target of above 85%.

The Board established a new adjusted operating margin milestone of 14% for 2028, a step toward its existing medium-term target of 18%, to be driven by commercial execution, pricing discipline, procurement savings and cost-base optimisation rather than improved market conditions.

"Trading through the period was consistent with the encouraging trends seen as we entered 2026, resulting in 7.8% like-for-like revenue growth and performance in line with the Board's expectations," said chief executive Scott Fawcett.

Full-year 2026 expectations remain unchanged, with adjusted operating margins expected to stay broadly flat year-on-year as the Group reinvests and rebuilds variable compensation.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

Essentra returned to organic growth across all three regions in H1 2026, with like-for-like revenue up 7.8% and adjusted operating margin expanding to 10.9%. The company has now set a concrete 2028 margin milestone of 14%—a step toward its 18% medium-term target—to be driven by pricing discipline, procurement savings, and cost optimization rather than market tailwinds. This signals confidence in execution even as full-year 2026 margins are expected to stay flat due to reinvestment and variable compensation rebuild.

Investment case

The 2028 margin target anchors near-term delivery expectations and demonstrates a path to mid-teens profitability through internal levers. However, full-year 2026 margin flatness and the first full financial year post-close for Boteco triggering accretive impact means material margin expansion is deferred; near-term investors should not expect step-change improvement until 2027 at earliest.

Broker upbeat after H1 beat and margin upside

Shore Capital analyst Tom Fraine, in a note, highlighted that the results came in about 5% ahead of market consensus, with 7.8% like‑for‑like revenue growth and roughly 13% momentum across May–June.

The broker repeated a Buy rating, and flagged that the company-set FY28F operating margin target of 14% is materially above the 12.2% analyst consensus, calling it a key forward catalyst for a re‑rating.

Fraine added that the June-completed Boteco acquisition and an almost-complete ERP implementation could unlock efficiencies that support an estimated c.40% drop‑through from revenue into profit and considerable upside.
