Anglo American (LSE:AAL) announced said its Quellaveco copper mine in Peru and three managed operations in Chile have been awarded The Copper Mark, a certification that confirms responsible mining practices, following independent assessments of their responsible production practices.

The mining group, which is refocusing its portfolio on copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients after agreeing to sell its steelmaking coal and nickel businesses and separate De Beers, said the award marks Quellaveco's first Copper Mark and Molybdenum Mark since entering production.

The Los Bronces and El Soldado mines and the Chagres smelter in Chile had their Copper Mark status reaffirmed, having first been awarded the recognition in 2022.

Los Bronces also retained its Molybdenum Mark, and all four sites achieved a first Copper Mark Chain of Custody award, covering responsible sourcing and supply chain traceability.

The assessments began in October 2025 and measured the sites against 33 performance areas, spanning environmental risk management, tailings management, mine closure, occupational health and safety, and human rights.

"Quellaveco is a blueprint for responsible mining," said Tony Power, chief executive of Anglo American in Peru.

Michèle Brülhart, executive director of the Copper Mark, said Quellaveco is now Anglo American's fourth awarded site alongside the three Chilean operations.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

Anglo American's Quellaveco copper mine in Peru earned its first Copper Mark and Molybdenum Mark following independent assessment, while three Chilean operations (Los Bronces, El Soldado, and Chagres smelter) had their 2022 Copper Mark awards reaffirmed. All four sites also achieved a first Copper Mark Chain of Custody award covering supply chain traceability. The recognition validates responsible production practices across Anglo American's copper portfolio as the company refocuses on copper, premium iron ore, and crop nutrients following its exit from steelmaking coal and nickel.

Investment case

The awards are a compliance and reputational validation rather than a material operational or financial event. They affirm that Anglo American's copper assets meet independent standards for environmental, health, safety, and human rights practices—relevant to long-term operational license and ESG positioning, but do not alter production capacity, cost structure, or earnings guidance.
