Metals Exploration (AIM:MTL) reported to the stock exchange an incident at its La India project construction site in Nicaragua on 19 October resulted in the death of a contractor's employee.
The AIM-listed gold producer and developer said the incident occurred during construction work at a leach tank. The company has launched a full investigation and alerted the relevant authorities, and has closed the construction site while the matter remains under investigation. Metals Exploration said no further details can be released until the investigation is complete.
"The safety, health and welfare of all colleagues and contractors remains the Company's top priority and Metals Exploration takes this loss of life incident, and its safety procedures, very seriously," the company said.
La India has been under active construction, with the process plant and civil works well advanced and first gold production previously flagged as on track for December.
The company drew down the remaining $6.8 million of its $27 million equipment loan from Banco de America Central earlier this month, reporting cash of £25.8 million as construction continued across the site.
