Arkadian Strategic Metals (AIM:AKN), the AIM-listed explorer previously known as Alba Mineral Resources, reported a loss after tax of £627,000 for the six months to 31 May, down from £761,000 a year earlier.
The period was dominated by the group's move to take a controlling 51% interest in the Motzfeldt Critical Metals Project in South Greenland, a polymetallic deposit containing rare earth elements, niobium, tantalum and zirconium.
The Government of Greenland approved the additional 25.5% stake acquisition in May and confirmed the exploration licence had entered its second five-year term, running to 2030. Surface samples from the Merino prospect returned assays of up to 1.36% total rare earth oxides and 2.3% zirconium oxide, grades the company said were at least 2.6 times those in the existing Aries JORC resource area.
At the Clogau-St David's gold mine in Wales, ten blasts advanced underground development by 13.8 metres, but assays from processed material returned uneconomic gold grades. Sulphide mineralisation found at the development face has prompted further metallurgical work to determine whether gold recovery methods need to change.
Net assets stood at £8.3 million at period end, up £0.8 million from November, largely reflecting the Motzfeldt investment, while cash fell to £305,000 from £362,000.
The company raised £800,000 through a March placing to fund Clogau development, Motzfeldt technical work and general working capital.
Post period, engineers installed ladders and access platforms to reach the historic Jack Williams stope at Clogau, opening a previously inaccessible section of the mine's Main Lode for sampling.
"We have wasted no time in investigating other previously gold-bearing areas of the mine," said executive chairman George Frangeskides.
Results from hyperspectral imaging and environmental baseline studies at Motzfeldt, completed during the 2026 field programme, are now awaited.
News Intelligence what this means for the company
Arkadian took majority control of its Motzfeldt rare earths project in Greenland after Greenland's government approved a 25.5% stake acquisition in May, lifting the company's holding to 51%. The half-year loss narrowed to £627,000 from £761,000 a year earlier, but cash fell sharply to £305,000 from £362,000 despite an £800,000 March placing—a burn rate that leaves limited runway. At Clogau gold mine in Wales, underground development advanced only 13.8 metres over ten blasts and assays returned uneconomic grades, forcing a pivot to explore previously inaccessible sections and reassess metallurgical recovery methods.
Control of Motzfeldt signals a strategic shift toward critical metals, with surface samples from the Merino prospect grading 2.6 times higher in rare earth oxides than the existing Aries resource—a potential upside if drilling confirms bulk grades. However, cash of £305,000 against a £8.3 million net asset base and ongoing burn leaves the company dependent on near-term capital raises or asset monetisation to fund both Motzfeldt's 2026 field programme and Clogau's development, while Clogau's uneconomic grades and need for metallurgical rework have pushed near-term gold production further into doubt.
