17:11 — FTSE 100 closes lower, marks six-day losing run

The FTSE 100 closed at 10,726.38, down 23 points or 0.22%, around its lowest level of the day.

Notably, it was the index's sixth straight day ending in the red.

Miners were the session's one consistent pocket of strength even as the broader index slipped.

Patrick Munnelly at Tickmill noted that the mining-led rebound attempt was offset by oil, inflation and data risks weighing on the wider market, a read borne out by the fallers list, where Associated British Foods (LSE:ABF) dropped 2.9% to 1,992.5p, Croda International (LSE:CRDA) fell 2.82% to 3,166p, and Experian (LSE:EXPN) lost 2.8% to 2,809p, all closing at session lows.

The session's macro undertone was the unwinding of Fed rate-hike expectations after Friday's soft US retail sales data, with September hike odds falling from 50% to 30% over the past week.

That repricing drove gold to a session high of $4,484.4, up 1.06%, while the dollar index eased to 99.486.

On Wall Street, the Dow was down 0.34% at 53,551.99, the S&P 500 off 0.16% at 7,773.37, while the Nasdaq Composite bucked the trend to add 0.1% at 26,755.33.

Amongst Monday's small-cap movers was Nostrum Oil & Gas, which plunged 37.5% to 2.5p, after confirming the $304.6m sale of its Kazakhstan operations to Altaris Holding.

Tertiary Minerals (LSE:TYM) surged 15.38% on a newly discovered shallow copper zone at its Mushima North project, and Panther Metals (LSE:PALM) rose 9.62% on a Dotted Lake magnesium recovery update.

Time Finance (AIM:TIME) climbed 9.52% to 57.5p as its £55m recommended cash takeover by Bentley Park (UK), parent of Ultimate Finance, was confirmed.

Arc Minerals (AIM:ARCM) added 8.33% after selecting a driller for its Botswana copper programme, while Andrada Mining (AIM:ATM) rose 7.69% on completion of financial close for its Uis mine funding.

Pensana (LSE:PRE) fell 7.76% after saying a board appointment at its Cascade subsidiary remains unfiled with the Guernsey Registry, and First Tin (LSE:1SN) slipped 5.3% despite an updated feasibility study said to enhance the value of its Taronga project.

16:10 — FTSE holds near 10,737

The FTSE 100 is pinned at 10,737, having turned negative, down 12.74 points.

Wall Street remains soft into the London afternoon, with the Dow off 230 points, or 0.43%, to 53502.41 and the S&P 500 down 11.57 points to 7774.19, while the Nasdaq Composite has nudged into positive territory at 26761.97, up 0.12%.

14:45 — Wall Street opens softer; FTSE holds its own fade near 10,730

Wall Street's opened lower, with the Dow down 147 points, or 0.27%, to 53,584.68.

The S&P 500 was off 11 points to 7,774.39, though the Nasdaq Composite little changed at 26,722.88.

Meanwhile, the VIX has ticked up to 15.03, up 5.47% on the session, a shift from the subdued reading earlier in the day and consistent with the softer US tone.

13:11 — Wall Street indicated modestly higher as Fed rate-hike bets fade

Wall Street benchmarks point higher ahead of Monday's open.

The S&P 500 up 0.12% and the Nasdaq 100 up 0.44%, with the Dow indicated 0.22% softer.

The backdrop is a dollar that has slipped toward two-month lows after a run of soft US data, including an unexpected drop in retail sales, pushed traders to pare bets on a September Fed hike, odds have fallen from roughly 50% to 30% over the past week.

Gold is extending its advance toward $4,450 an ounce, meanwhile, Brent crude was little changed near $87 a barrel, holding roughly levels flagged since the weekend amid the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping data show transit activity slowing after tanker attacks even as US-Iran talks stall.

In London, the FTSE 100 continued to consolidate just above 10,760.

The FTSE 100 continued to hold positive territory as the London seesion moved to midday, up 11 points to 10,761.

Gold was up 0.3% to $4,452 an ounce, whilst the dollar index was off 0.22% as traders continue to pare back bets on a near-term Federal Reserve rate hike.

09:51 — Fed rate-cut bets lift dollar

Attentions on this quiet Monday morning are focused on the US economy and Wall Street, macros and economic data.

A run of soft US data, including an unexpected drop in retail sales, has markets paring bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike, with the dollar slipping toward two-month lows and Treasuries gaining.

Saxo Markets' Neil Wilson notes that odds of a September hike have fallen from 50% to 30%, and the DXY is down 0.33% to 99.34 this morning, with emerging-market currencies pushing higher on the same repricing.

In London, the FTSE 100 has eased after the earlier slightly-more-positive-start.

The benchmark stood at 10,763.27, up just 13 points.

09:01 — South32, Greatland, and ECR among London's mining movers

South32 tops the FTSE 100's gainers, up 5.02% to 259.6p and sitting at its session high, extending the mining sector's lead over the broader index.

Antofagasta is close behind at 3702p, up 3.26% and also at its session high, with Anglo American (LSE:AAL) up 2.34% to 3940p.

Greatland Gold and Endeavour Mining have joined the move, up 2.64% and 2.02% respectively, though none of the four carry an identified catalyst in today's disclosures.

The FTSE 100 itself sits at 10778.41, up 28 points, having eased back slightly from its opening high.

On the small-cap board, Ecr Minerals has confirmed farm-in and joint venture agreements for its Creswick Gold Project, while Panther Metals has issued a Phase 1 update on magnesium recovery at its Dotted Lake project.

Unicorn Mineral Resources has agreed a £1.25m unsecured loan facility, Springfield Properties (LSE:SPR) has completed a land sale with final deferred consideration payment, and Predator Oil & Gas has secured the Snowcap-3 rig contract.

08:20 — Miners drive FTSE 100 to 10,783 as AstraZeneca gains on lung cancer data

The FTSE 100 traded up around 33 points at 10,783.17, with mining stocks doing the heavy lifting.

South32 leads the index at 255.8p, up 3.48% and sitting at its session high, with Antofagasta close behind at 3699.5p, up 3.19% and also at the top of its range.

Anglo American and Rio Tinto are both firmer too, up 2.26% and 1.06% respectively, giving resources stocks the clearest sector pull of the morning.

AstraZeneca (LSE:AZN) has added 1.19% to 11,595.86p on its first price reaction to this morning's lung cancer trial data, covering Enhertu's progression-free survival improvement in first-line HER2-mutant disease and the Tagrisso combination's survival gains in EGFR-mutant lung cancer. The stock's advance comes despite the company also having halted a separate Phase III lung cancer trial following a data review.

Celsius Resources has plunged 16.67% to 0.005p after disclosing a legal and corporate tangle involving Kiri Industries and its Equinaire subsidiary, including the lifting of a temporary protection order at a Philippine court and planned arbitration over a loan agreement with its Makilala Mining unit.

08:01 — Time Finance takeover leads morning headlines

Time Finance agrees a recommended £55m cash takeover by Bentley Park (UK), the parent of Ultimate Finance Group.

AstraZeneca reports Enhertu improved progression-free survival in first-line HER2-mutated lung cancer, and separately says Tagrisso plus Orpathys improved both progression-free and overall survival in EGFR-mutated lung cancer.

Telecom Plus tells its AGM that multiservice customer growth is running at more than 2.5 times the FY26 rate, ahead of its 10% full-year target.

Petards Group says a half-year trading update shows the upward trend in financial performance continuing into 2026 with better margins.

US Solar Fund extends the exclusivity period for its potential portfolio sale.

Tekmar Group (AIM:TGP) confirms a new contract award.

06:45 — FTSE seen firmer at Monday's open as futures point to 10,776

The FTSE 100 is seen firmer ahead of Monday's open, with IG's early pre-market quote marked at 10,776, up 19.8 points from Friday's close of 10,753.

Wall Street finished Friday on a softer note, with the Dow off 123 points to 53,716.94, the S&P 500 down 16.57 points to 7,782.42, and the Nasdaq Composite lower by 91.71 points at 26,711.31.

In Asia overnight, Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 208 points, or 0.3%, to 68,922.37.

The dollar index has slipped 0.17% to 99.494, with cable indicated up 0.13% at 1.3554.

At the same time, the price of gold firmed 0.34% to $4,452.

Both major cryptocurrencies are higher, with bitcoin up 0.91% to $63,403 and ether up 1.23% to $1,897.

Brent crude is indicated 0.36% softer at $86.95 and WTI down a similar margin at $81.31 per barrel.

Ipek Ozkardeskaya, analyst at Swissquote, highlighted geopolitical, debt and rising-yield risks building even as strong second-quarter earnings continue to support the broader bullish case for equities.
