Funding and regulatory milestones dominated today's health and bio coverage, with one AIM biotech emerging from a major capital raise just as it prepares to launch a pivotal cancer trial. Elsewhere, a DNA technology specialist struck a new commercial partnership while a biopesticide developer reported wider losses despite a lengthened reporting period and fresh regulatory approvals across its product range.

Faron's cash pile doubles ahead of Phase 2b MDS trial launch

Faron Pharmaceuticals reported cash and cash equivalents of EUR 32.0 million at 30 June, more than double the EUR 13.5 million it held a year earlier, as the AIM-quoted biotech positions itself to launch a pivotal trial for its lead cancer immunotherapy. Faron is developing bexmarilimab, an antibody therapy designed to reprogram myeloid cells to activate anti-tumour immunity, and the strengthened balance sheet follows a EUR 40.1 million rights issue completed in April, one of Finland's largest biotech financings to date.

The capital now funds preparations for the randomized Phase 2b BEXERA trial, supported by a collaboration with clinical research organisation Parexel agreed in April. The trial will enrol 90 patients across up to 35 sites in the US, Europe and the UK to select a recommended Phase 3 dose for bexmarilimab combined with azacitidine in frontline higher-risk myelodysplastic syndrome. Net assets swung to EUR 11.6 million from a deficit of EUR 16.7 million a year earlier, the operating loss narrowed slightly to EUR 11.1 million from EUR 11.8 million, and loss per share fell to EUR 0.06 from EUR 0.18, even as research and development spending rose to EUR 7.6 million from EUR 7.1 million.

"With our strengthened balance sheet, we are well positioned to advance the program, generate further clinical evidence and maintain strategic flexibility while continuing partnering discussions," said Juho Jalkanen, chief executive of Faron Pharmaceuticals.

The financial turnaround matters because it removes the overhang that has dogged Faron for years, a balance sheet too thin to fund a pivotal trial without diluting shareholders further or seeking a rescue partner. With BEXERA set to begin in the second half of 2026, and matured BEXMAB data presented in June showing median complete remission duration extended to 16.1 months in treatment-naive higher-risk MDS patients, Faron now has both the clinical rationale and the capital runway to negotiate from a position of strength in any partnering discussions, rather than out of financial necessity.

4basebio strikes marketing tie-up with viral vector CDMO

4basebio (AIM:4BB) has signed a non-exclusive Strategic Collaboration and Marketing Agreement with Genezen, a viral vector contract development and manufacturing organisation owned by Ampersand Capital Partners. The AIM-listed group, which specialises in enzymatically produced, cell-free DNA for genetic medicines, will supply Genezen with access to its Research Use Only, High-Quality and GMP-grade hpDNA technology as starting material for drug developers' clinical programmes, with shares trading at 475.0p, up 1.064%.

Beyond the supply arrangement, the two companies will collaborate commercially, including joint sales pitches and technical presentations to prospective customers. 4basebio's enzymatic manufacturing process strips microbial contamination and antibiotic resistance genes out of the DNA production chain, which the company says improves safety profiles and shortens development timelines from sequence design through to clinical use. "This partnership reflects our commitment to pairing our proprietary DNA technology with partners who share our dedication to safety, quality, and reliability," Christine Wolosin, 4basebio's chief commercial officer. Susan DeCosta, added that "as the cell and gene therapy field continues to mature, developers need manufacturing solutions that not only address today's challenges, but are designed with the needs of later-stage development in mind."

The deal extends 4basebio's reach into viral vector manufacturing, a segment central to the cell and gene therapy supply chain, without requiring the company to build its own vector production capability. For a specialist DNA technology provider, embedding its hpDNA platform inside a CDMO's commercial pipeline offers a route to broader adoption among drug developers than direct sales alone could achieve.

Eden Research posts wider loss on extended 15-month period

Eden Research (AIM:EDEN) reported revenue of £4.9 million for the 15 months to 31 March, up from £4.3 million in the year to December 2024, though the biopesticide developer's operating loss widened to £2.9 million from £2.2 million. Shares fell 6.383% to 2.2p. The company changed its accounting reference date during the period, extending the reporting window from a calendar year to 15 months to better align with the Northern Hemisphere growing season.

Cash fell to £1.5 million at period-end from £3.7 million a year earlier, though Eden completed a £10.8 million fundraise in the second quarter of 2026 to fund development of its insecticide and second-generation fungicide candidates. Regulatory progress featured heavily across the period: flagship fungicide Mevalone secured approval for powdery mildew control on Californian grapes and gained a French label extension covering downy and powdery mildew. "I remain very confident in the company, its products, technologies, and its commercial prospects and am pleased to report another successful period of progress," said chairman Lykele van der Broek.

The widening loss reflects a company still investing ahead of revenue, but the fresh fundraise and expanding regulatory footprint for Mevalone give Eden runway to push its next-generation fungicide and insecticide candidates toward market at a time when demand for sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides continues to build.
