Metlen Energy & Metals (LSE:MTLN) has signed a long-term commercial agreement to supply approximately 25% of the annual gallium production from its planned facility in Greece to a leading US technology company.

Metlen, the Athens-headquartered energy and metals group, says it is the first company in Europe to establish integrated gallium production and the first to secure a commercial supply deal for European-produced gallium.

The work stems from research carried out at the company's Aluminium of Greece plant alongside its newly formed Critical & Rare Metals sub-sector, part of M Metals.

Gallium is a critical raw material used in artificial intelligence hardware, renewables infrastructure, telecoms and defence applications, and global production is currently concentrated in a small number of countries.

Evangelos Mytilineos, Metlen's executive chairman, said the gallium project marks a new industrial chapter for Greece and Europe, adding that "this reflects both the strategic importance of gallium and the confidence of global technology leaders in the quality and reliability of our material, which has already undergone extensive qualification testing".

The European Commission has designated the gallium investment a Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act, and the European Investment Bank has approved financing for it under the REPowerEU framework.

The financial and granular details of the deal remained confidential.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

Metlen has secured its first commercial offtake agreement for European-produced gallium, committing 25% of planned annual output from its Greek facility to a major US technology company. The deal validates both the technical quality of Metlen's gallium (which has undergone qualification testing) and demand from global tech leaders for non-concentrated supply sources; it also anchors revenue visibility for a project already backed by EU strategic designation and European Investment Bank financing.

Investment case

This is the first material commercial validation of Metlen's gallium strategy. The deal does not quantify production volume or revenue (financial terms are confidential). The investment case would be further supported by insights into whether the remaining 75% of output finds buyers, and at what terms, and whether the project reaches planned capacity on schedule.
