UK authorises second oral GLP-1 pill as MedPal eyes wider funnel

The MHRA cleared Eli Lilly's once daily weight-loss tablet, the UK's second oral GLP-1 approval in two months, in a private-only market MedPal's New Health clinic already serves.

MedPal AI (AIM:MPAL), the AI-native digital health and pharmacy group, said the UK's medicines regulator has authorised orforglipron, Eli Lilly's once daily oral GLP-1 tablet sold under the brand Foundayo.

The London-listed small cap earlier this year became an approved purchaser of Eli Lilly products in January and holds direct supply agreements with both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.

MedPal points to US data showing over 80% of new prescriptions for the first oral GLP-1 there went to patients new to the therapy.

"The direction of travel is unmistakable," said chief executive Jason Drummond, adding that "every new authorisation potentially widens our customer funnel."

UK-first for Foundayo

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approval makes the UK the first country in Europe to clear the drug, covering weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related co-morbidity.

It follows the MHRA's June approval of Novo Nordisk's oral semaglutide tablet, meaning two of the world's largest drugmakers now have oral GLP-1 pills cleared in the UK ahead of the rest of Europe.

MedPal's New Health clinic generated over £180,000 in private prescription revenue in July from three weeks of marketing, an annualised run rate above £2.2 million, within a group-wide annualised recurring revenue run rate of approximately £8.6 million, the company disclosed on 4 August.

MedPal noted that Eli Lilly expects Foundayo to launch in the UK via private prescription later this month, with pricing yet to be announced.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

The MHRA cleared Eli Lilly's once-daily oral GLP-1 tablet (Foundayo) for UK private prescription, making the UK the first European market to approve two oral GLP-1 pills in two months. MedPal, which holds direct supply agreements with both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk and already operates the New Health clinic serving this market, stands to benefit from a widened patient funnel: the company disclosed that New Health generated over £180,000 in private prescription revenue in just three weeks of July marketing—an annualised run rate above £2.2 million—within a group-wide run rate of approximately £8.6 million. Each new authorisation expands the addressable population for MedPal's existing infrastructure and patient acquisition engine.

Investment case

The approval validates MedPal's positioning in the UK's emerging private oral GLP-1 market and removes a near-term regulatory gate. However, the investment case hinges on whether MedPal can sustain the July acquisition velocity (£180k in three weeks) and convert the widened funnel into durable unit economics—the company forecasts approximately £2,400 of recurring annual revenue per private GLP-1 patient, but execution risk remains material at micro-cap scale.
