Blencowe Resources (LSE:BRES) announced that new tests with offtake partner YUNASKO and US graphite specialist American Energy Technologies (AETC) have produced supercapacitor cells capable of power delivery approaching 2 kW/kg, with discharge rates successfully tested up to 70C.
The company, which is developing the Orom-Cross graphite project in Uganda, said the results will now move to independent evaluation at NASA laboratories, with new prototype cells expected to enter the testing schedule from December.
Blencowe has built non-binding offtake coverage beyond its planned Phase 1 production target of 20,000 tonnes per annum of graphite concentrate, and has been testing its material across a range of specialist applications including lead-acid batteries, hypersonic rocket components and anti-radar coatings, as it seeks to develop higher-value markets alongside conventional concentrate sales.
"These are extremely encouraging results, demonstrating the ability of Orom-Cross graphite to perform in some of the most demanding energy storage applications," said Iain Wearing, Blencowe's interim chief executive.
He said independent verification at NASA could "help accelerate acceptance of the technology across the wider defence and aerospace industries and further high-value commercial opportunities."
The latest cells, built with Orom-Cross graphite in both anode and cathode, are large 5Ah units that completed more than 130 formation cycles at a current of 10 amperes, with Ragone testing used to establish the power capability figures.
YUNASKO, a Ukraine-based developer of supercapacitors and hybrid lithium-ion battery technology, holds a five-year non-binding memorandum of understanding with Blencowe covering an initial 500 tonnes per annum of purified medium-flake graphite.

Wearing said the company was "now seeing repeated technical success across a growing range of demanding applications, from advanced batteries and supercapacitors to hypersonic aerospace and anti-radar technologies."
Blencowe's Orom-Cross project holds a JORC-classified mineral resource of 64.3 million tonnes at 6.03% total graphitic carbon, and the company has previously reported engagement with three European advanced aerial platform manufacturers over potential offtake for its ultra-fine graphite material used in defence coating applications.
NASA laboratory testing of the new prototype cells is expected to begin from December.
