Berkeley Energia (LSE:BKY) has appointed José Bogas Gálvez, former chief executive of Spanish utility Endesa, as an independent non-executive director.

The Australia-listed company is developing the Salamanca uranium project in Spain, which remains stalled in the permitting process.

Bogas stepped down as Endesa's chief executive in April after 12 years leading the company, during which he oversaw its transformation and defended its position in the Spanish electricity market.

He brings more than 40 years in the Spanish and European nuclear and electricity sectors, along with roles at industry bodies including the Spanish Energy Club, where he serves as honorary vice-chairman.

Executive director Robert Behets said Bogas's business and government networks would strengthen Berkeley's standing in Spain.

"To attract an individual of José's calibre and experience with extensive business and government networks will greatly strengthen our position and influence in Spain which will greatly assist Berkeley in its pursuit of unlocking the permitting situation for the Salamanca Project", Behets said.

Bogas will receive an annual director's fee of A$45,000 and has been granted 2m unlisted options exercisable at A$0.80 each before 30 September 2028, vesting after 18 months of continuous service.

Following the grant, Berkeley has 446.29m shares and 5.3m unlisted options on issue.
