Gelion secures six patents for sulfur battery technology

Gelion (AIM:GELN) has been granted six patents covering its Lithium-Sulfur battery technology, including three in the United States, two in Europe and one in Asia.

The AIM-listed company is developing Nano-Encapsulated Sulfur, a cathode material designed to replace critical minerals used in conventional lithium-ion battery cathodes with abundantly available sulfur, deployable within existing manufacturing lines.

The patents cover thermal management, cathode-electrolyte design and anode protection, extending Gelion's intellectual property beyond its core cathode material into complementary cell-level technologies.

The company said this broader protection reduces integration and intellectual property risk for battery manufacturers evaluating its technology, supporting adoption across global supply chains.

Gelion's strategy centres on a capital-light partnership model, supplying its sulfur cathode material for integration by cell manufacturers across multiple configurations and applications, rather than manufacturing cells itself.

The US grants align with the company's development roadmap as it pursues US market entry, and are intended to improve battery safety, cycling performance, cell lifespan and cathode stability during extended use.

"Securing these patents is an important milestone in strengthening the intellectual property around our sulfur cathode platform," said chief executive Matt Wood, adding that the protection gives partners "greater confidence to evaluate and integrate Gelion's technology."
