Motorpoint Group (LSE:MOTR), the independent omnichannel vehicle retailer, said retail volumes rose 11.1% in the first quarter of the financial year ending 31 March 2027, compared with the equivalent period a year earlier.

It said profitability improved strongly over the same period, supported by continued strong metal margins and cost discipline, according to a trading statement issued ahead of its annual general meeting.

"The board is pleased with performance in Q1 FY27," the company said, adding that stock levels had increased to support its growth plans.

Motorpoint Leeds, the group's 22nd store, opened on 10 July, with further openings expected under its store expansion programme. The company pointed to improved vehicle supply, including cars bought directly from consumers via its Sell Your Car channel, alongside continued investment in data, artificial intelligence and technology as additional supports to the quarter's performance.

Non-Executive Director Mary McNamara will step down from the board following the AGM's conclusion, after a ten-year tenure.

Motorpoint intends to provide its next trading update, covering the six months to 30 September, in early October.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

Motorpoint reported 11.1% retail volume growth in Q1 FY27 with improved profitability, driven by strong metal margins, cost discipline, and expanded inventory. The company opened its 22nd store in Leeds and continues to benefit from improved vehicle supply including its Sell Your Car channel. This extends the momentum from the prior year—pre-tax profit jumped 82.9% in the year to 31 March 2026—and signals the store expansion programme is executing as planned.

Investment case

The combination of double-digit volume growth, margin expansion, and disciplined cost management in a discretionary retail sector facing consumer headwinds strengthens the case for Motorpoint as a growth-stage specialist. The company's ability to grow inventory while improving profitability, alongside continued store rollout and technology investment, suggests the omnichannel model is scaling effectively, though the next six-month update in early October will be critical to confirm momentum is sustained.
