ITM Power (AIM:ITM), the Sheffield-based hydrogen electrolyser manufacturer, confirmed on Thursday that the £46.5m grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has been formally awarded, following the original announcement in April.

The grant combines with a previously announced £40m equity investment from Great British Energy to fund a dedicated manufacturing line for the company's next-generation Chronos electrolyser stack, targeting 1 GW of annual production capacity at its existing Sheffield site.

The Chronos line will incorporate automated, bespoke production equipment covering catalyst-coated membrane production, electrode welding, specialist coatings, and stack assembly, alongside cleanroom infrastructure.

ITM Power said the build will draw on manufacturing processes already introduced to its current Trident production line, a design choice it believes reduces execution risk while enabling a scalable, high-throughput platform.

"Combined with the strategic equity investment from Great British Energy, this marks a pivotal step in establishing us at the centre of the UK's hydrogen economy," said Chief Executive Dennis Schulz, adding: "Sheffield is recognised as the historic home of steelmaking. We will make it just as famous for hydrogen."
