H-Power (AIM:HPOW) announced it has successfully completed the first phase of its joint development agreement (JDA) with Komatsu and agreed to begin the final phase.

The AIM-listed company develops ammonia-based low-carbon hydrogen production and hydrogen-to-power technology.

The JDA, announced on 10 February, pairs H-Power's proprietary ammonia cracking technology with a Komatsu industrial diesel engine to assess a scalable ammonia-fuelled engine platform.

The final phase covers the build and demonstration of the integrated system, running from September through to December 2027.

The total contract value is approximately $2 million.

Komatsu, listed in Tokyo and Osaka with a market capitalisation of roughly $40 billion, is among the world's largest manufacturers of construction, mining and industrial heavy equipment.

Success under the agreement could give Komatsu's customers a sustainable alternative for their construction and mining fleets, opening a further vertical for H-Power's technology with a sizeable addressable market.

"We are delighted to enter into the final phase of this agreement with Komatsu, which further strengthens our partnership and validates the inherent value of our proprietary ammonia cracking technology to global players", said John Wilson, chief executive of H-Power.

The demonstration phase is scheduled to run through to December 2027.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

H-Power has advanced its Komatsu partnership to a final demonstration phase, securing a ~$2 million contract to build and test an integrated ammonia-fuelled engine platform through December 2027. This validates the commercial viability of H-Power's proprietary ammonia cracking technology with a $40 billion industrial equipment manufacturer, and opens a new revenue stream in the heavy equipment sector—construction and mining fleets—where sustainable fuel alternatives command a large addressable market.

Knock-on
  • Success in the Komatsu demonstration could establish H-Power as a technology partner for other heavy equipment OEMs seeking ammonia-based powertrains, multiplying the addressable market beyond Komatsu's own customer base.
  • The 16-month build-and-test window (September 2027–December 2027) is a near-term value inflection point; delays or technical setbacks would materially impact the partnership's credibility and H-Power's ability to license the technology at scale.
Investment case

The deal validates H-Power's core technology with a tier-one industrial partner and opens a new vertical (heavy equipment engines) alongside its existing hydrogen supply and fuel-cell generator businesses. At ~$2 million, the contract is modest relative to the long-term licensing potential, but the partnership's progression from phase one to final demonstration suggests technical and commercial momentum.
