Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO), the Danish diabetes and obesity drugmaker, and Amazon Web Services announced a strategic partnership to accelerate drug discovery and modernise the company's technology infrastructure.

The two companies have set up a co-innovation hub in London where AWS engineers and AI specialists work alongside Novo Nordisk's research and development teams.

The stated goal is to compress the path from identifying a drug target to administering a first human dose.

Under the agreement, AWS becomes Novo Nordisk's preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, combining Novo Nordisk's therapeutic expertise with AWS's cloud infrastructure and life sciences tools.

Novo Nordisk plans to use Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock to identify drug targets and link genomic, imaging and clinical data, while Amazon Bedrock AgentCore will deploy AI agents to drive efficiencies across operations.

The company says the broader collaboration has already cut clinical documentation time and given more than 25,000 employees productivity tools.

"Partnering with AWS is about making AI a driver of innovation across Novo Nordisk," said Mike Doustdar, the company's president and chief executive, adding that the hub is intended to develop "responsible AI solutions" for people with serious chronic diseases.

AWS chief executive Matt Garman said the partnership aims to "compress drug discovery timelines" and scale findings across therapeutic areas.

Novo Nordisk separately works with other Amazon units, including Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon One Medical, on marketing and delivering therapies to patients.
