ValiRx (AIM:VAL), the AIM-listed life science company focused on early-stage cancer therapeutics and women's health, said its majority-owned subsidiary Cytolytix has received notification of intention to grant a second European patent.
The new patent builds on the European grant of Cytolytix's original peptide formulation patent, "Nanoparticle for Anti-Cancer Peptides and Uses Thereof", announced on 27 May.
ValiRx said the two patent families strengthen Cytolytix's intellectual property position and support ongoing licensing and partnership discussions. Separately, ValiRx filed for additional patent protection on 26 May covering a second-generation delivery platform based on novel lipid formulations of its oncolytic peptide.
The new filing includes data showing the platform induces immunogenic cell death, a form of cell death that alerts the immune system, in triple negative breast cancer cells.
Mark Eccleston, chief executive of ValiRx, said the notice "is a significant milestone for Cytolytix, confirming the novelty of the platform and providing a solid base to build on with further IP developed in house."
He added that the immune-activating data supports the company's comparative oncology approach, which tests therapies in pet patients with naturally occurring tumours alongside human patients with intact immune systems.
Eccleston credited expertise from Inaphaea and partners ScreenIn3D, Voxcell and Bioreparia for advancing the platform's development.
ValiRx said a further announcement will follow once the second patent is formally granted.
