Poolbeg Pharma (AIM:POLB), an AIM-listed clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on cancer immunotherapy, has been granted a patent in South Africa for its lead asset POLB 001, covering the treatment or prevention of hypercytokinemia and severe influenza.

Protection runs until December 2038.

POLB 001 is a p38 MAP kinase inhibitor being developed across multiple indications, including prevention of cancer immunotherapy-induced Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) and severe influenza.

The South Africa grant adds to an existing patent portfolio covering p38 MAP kinase inhibitors for severe influenza and POLB 001 for hypercytokinemia prevention, with further applications filed specifically around cancer immunotherapy-induced CRS.

Poolbeg has framed intellectual property development as a priority in its stated goal of attracting a licensing or commercialisation partner for POLB 001.

"This latest patent grant reflects our commitment to further strengthen POLB 001's global IP portfolio, enhancing its value and attractiveness to prospective partners," said Chief Executive Jeremy Skillington.
