Cora Gold (AIM:CORA), the West African-focused gold developer, said Mali's Council of Ministers approved the first interim renewal of its Sanankoro II exploration permit on 21 August.

The 84.11 sq km permit, awarded in March 2021, will eventually form part of the mining permit area for Cora's flagship Sanankoro Gold Project in south Mali.

The renewal follows a partial lifting of Mali's November 2022 mining permit moratorium in March 2025, which allowed renewal applications but excluded new permit issuances.

Two more renewals, covering the Bokoro II and Kodiou exploration permits, must still be completed before Cora can finalise a permit reshaping exercise and progress its application for a proposed 100 sq km mining permit at Sanankoro.

"The next stage in this process is the renewal of each of the Bokoro II and Kodiou exploration permits which were not completed before the November 2022 moratorium came into effect," said Bert Monro, chief executive of Cora Gold.

Monro said the Front-End Engineering Design process, announced in May, is progressing alongside a drill programme targeting extensions to existing deposits and greenfield targets near the mine.

Cora secured a binding $120 million gold stream in April, which together with existing equity fully funds Sanankoro's development through to production.

The 2025 Definitive Feasibility Study outlined a probable reserve of 531koz at 1.13g/t gold, a post-tax internal rate of return of 98% and all-in sustaining costs of $1,623 per ounce.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

Mali's Council of Ministers approved the first interim renewal of Cora Gold's Sanankoro II exploration permit on 21 August, removing a regulatory hurdle toward the company's flagship project mining permit. The approval follows a partial lifting of Mali's November 2022 mining permit moratorium in March 2025 and clears one of three exploration permit renewals needed before Cora can finalize its application for a 100 sq km mining permit at Sanankoro.

Investment case

The $120 million gold stream secured in April, together with existing equity, fully funds development through to production, and this permit renewal removes a key execution risk on the path to construction. Two further exploration permit renewals remain outstanding before the mining permit application can proceed, keeping near-term regulatory risk material for a junior developer.
