Chemring Group (LSE:CHG) has been awarded a sole-source Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) Full Rate Production contract for the Joint Biological Tactical Detection System (JBTDS), a US military programme of record, with a contract ceiling value of $48.8m and an estimated completion date of June 2029.

The contract was issued to Chemring Sensors & Electronic Systems (CSES), the group's US subsidiary, by the Capability Program Executive for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, and follows successful field testing and acceptance trials with the US military.

Alongside the IDIQ ceiling, CSES has received an initial production order worth $36.3m, running through to March 2028, with all work to be performed at the subsidiary's facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The JBTDS system rapidly detects and identifies airborne biological warfare agents.

Chief executive Michael Ord said the award "sits alongside our sole source position on the Enhanced Maritime Biological Detector programme for the US Navy, and positions Chemring as the market leader in the field of biological warfare agent detection."

The FTSE 250 defence technology group, which employs approximately 2,700 people across production facilities in four countries, said CSES has delivered biological threat detection capabilities to the US military for more than two decades.
