Afentra announced that it has had the Risk Service Contract for onshore Block KON4 formally approved by Presidential Decree and will operate the block with a 35% interest alongside Grupo Simples Oil, Sonangol E&P, Brite's Oil and Gas and Sodedurs.
KON4 covers 1,387 sqkm in the onshore Kwanza basin and contains the Quenguela Norte field, estimated to hold over 200 mmbo of discovered oil in place, which previously reached peak production of 12,000 bopd and recovered 46 mmbo before being shut‑in in 1999.
The company says KON4 offers near‑term redevelopment potential anchored by Quenguela Norte plus overlooked near‑field Tertiary and Cretaceous exploration upside, and the block complements Afentra's non‑operated positions in KON15 and KON19 where it holds 45% stakes.
Initial technical and subsurface work has started, focusing on reactivation studies for Quenguela Norte wells and integrating a recently completed high‑resolution eFTG survey with the existing sparse 2D seismic, with formal signing of the contract expected at a later date.
"The formal award of KON4 is a significant milestone for Afentra, adding an operated position to our growing onshore Kwanza basin portfolio and reinforcing our commitment to building a material presence in this under‑explored but highly prospective basin," Paul McDade, Chief Executive Officer, said.
