EnergyPathways (LSE:EPP) shares were moving up, gaining 5.69% to 6.5p, after a Costain engineering study shortlisted potential Barrow onshore sites for the MESH project.

MESH is an integrated long-duration energy storage project in the east Irish Sea that will combine compressed air, natural gas and hydrogen storage in purpose-built offshore salt caverns and medium-range gas field storage, and will connect to Britain’s energy network via new and existing pipelines and transmission lines, and it was designated a project of "national significance" by DESNZ in September 2025.

"Costain has provided a strong foundation of front-end engineering design and has identified a number of quality sites for locating the MESH project's onshore facilities," said Ben Clube, CEO of EnergyPathways.

EnergyPathways said the Barrow development masterplan could over time include hydrogen and graphite production, clean ammonia production, an energy storage operations base, connection infrastructure for the offshore LDES and gas storage facilities, and onshore storage and industrial product export facilities.

The company said the development of these onshore facilities will be dependent on securing financing and planning approvals and that the planned hydrogen facility is intended to produce graphite as a by-product.

Team Barrow, the UK Government-led initiative involving BAE Systems, Westmorland & Furness Council and other stakeholders, is leading the masterplan for Barrow and has publicly welcomed the MESH project.

Costain's move to detailed design represents the next engineering milestone as EnergyPathways advances MESH towards a final investment decision.
