FDA clears Mounjaro for heart protection, MedPal flags market boost

MedPal AI said the US approval of Eli Lilly's Mounjaro to cut cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes patients opens a far larger market for its New Health GLP-1 clinic.

MedPal AI (AIM:MPAL) noted the US Food and Drug Administration has approved Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY)'s Mounjaro (tirzepatide) to lower the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk.

The AIM-listed AI-native digital health and pharmacy group operates New Health (new.co.uk), a dedicated GLP-1 clinic that dispenses Mounjaro under direct arrangements as an authorised purchaser of Eli Lilly products.

Eli Lilly estimates one in three adults with type 2 diabetes in the US has undetected cardiovascular disease, a population the new indication now opens beyond weight management.

Applying the same ratio to the UK, where more than 4.7 million people are diagnosed with diabetes according to Diabetes UK, the board estimates around 1.4 million UK adults could fall within the addressed population.

The approval rests on the SURPASS-CVOT trial, which followed 13,299 patients for approximately five years and showed an 8% lower rate of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke for Mounjaro versus Trulicity (dulaglutide).

The European Medicines Agency added the cardiovascular data to Mounjaro's EU label in June, though no equivalent UK label change has been announced.

Foundayo, Eli Lilly's once-daily oral GLP-1 pill authorised by the MHRA on 10 August, is now live on New Health within days of first UK commercial supply, the London-listed firm added. New Health generated over £180,000 in private prescription revenue in July after three weeks of marketing, an annualised run rate above £2.2 million within the group's around £8.6 million annualised recurring revenue.

"Every time the science widens, the market follows suit and this is the biggest expansion yet," said Jason Drummond, MedPal's founder and chief executive.

News Intelligence what this means for the company

The FDA's approval of Mounjaro for cardiovascular protection in type 2 diabetes expands the addressable market beyond weight management. MedPal AI, which operates New Health—a GLP-1 clinic dispensing Mounjaro as an authorised Eli Lilly purchaser—estimates this opens a UK population of around 1.4 million adults, materially larger than the weight-loss segment it has served to date. New Health generated over £180,000 in private prescription revenue in July, and the cardiovascular indication removes a key barrier to prescribing for a much larger patient cohort with diagnosed disease rather than cosmetic intent.

Investment case

The cardiovascular label expansion removes a major constraint on Mounjaro's addressable market in the UK and validates MedPal's clinic model for a disease-driven, rather than lifestyle-driven, patient population. However, the story does not confirm whether the UK regulator has yet updated Mounjaro's label to match the EMA's June addition of cardiovascular data, leaving regulatory timing uncertain.
