Invinity Energy Systems (AIM:IES) shares surged 11.1% to 34.4p, after the company said it will supply a 32 MWh vanadium flow battery to Pacific Steel's Mojave Micro Mill in California.
The system is supported by grant funding from the California Energy Commission's LDES Program and will sit alongside a 40 MWp PV array to deliver on-demand, low-carbon solar power to the mill.
"The long-duration capabilities and versatility of Invinity's vanadium flow battery will support the operational efficiency and resilience of the steel plant and optimize the plant's use of clean, renewable energy," Jonah Steinbuck of the California Energy Commission said.
The battery was chosen for its ability to cycle heavily to meet the mill's energy-intensive needs and to support Pacific Steel Group's plan to recycle 500,000 tons of scrap metal annually into seismic-grade rebar.
Delivery of the batteries, which Invinity plans to manufacture in the USA, is expected to commence in Q1 2027, with associated revenues recognised at that point, the company said.
The Mojave Micro Mill is scheduled to enter operation in the second half of 2027.
