Gelion wins Innovate UK funding for three-year Nissan solid‑state Li‑S collaboration

Gelion has secured Innovate UK grant funding and launched a three-year CoRe‑SoLiS project with Nissan Technical Centre Europe and the University of Oxford to integrate its NES™ sulfur cathode into next‑generation solid‑state EV batteries.

Gelion (LSE:GELN) announced a three-year collaborative project called Cost‑effective, Resilient Solid‑state Li‑S (CoRe‑SoLiS) to integrate its Nano‑Encapsulated Sulfur (NES™) cathode into next‑generation solid‑state EV batteries, in a venture with Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) and the University of Oxford.

The project starts in June 2026, has a total cost of £3.4 million and secured £2.4 million of combined Innovate UK grant funding across partners, including a £1.6 million award to Gelion's UK subsidiary.

CoRe‑SoLiS aims to deliver a high‑power, high‑energy, long‑duration solid‑state lithium‑sulfur battery pack that meets automotive KPIs for performance, safety and manufacturability, aligning with Nissan's EV36Zero investment and its Sunderland manufacturing hub.

Gelion says NES™ replaces nickel and cobalt with abundant, low‑cost sulfur as a drop‑in cathode material for existing lines and that its nanoconfinement approach overcomes polysulfide‑driven power and cycle‑life limits while Oxford supplies advanced anode and cell‑level expertise to de‑risk integration.

The Innovate UK award will fund Gelion's R&D and integration work with results intended to inform scale‑up, manufacturing and commercialisation decisions and potentially broaden collaborations across automotive and energy storage markets, Gelion said.
