genedrive (AIM:GDR), the point-of-care pharmacogenetic testing company, had its Genedrive® MT-RNR1 ID kit transitioned into Business as Usual clinical service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust hospitals from 1 May.

The move affects the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at Royal Sussex County Hospital, which handles approximately 400 NICU admissions a year and has identified nearly 40 babies with the MT-RNR1 variant since the test's introduction in the UK, enabling alternative antibiotic prescriptions and reducing the risk of aminoglycoside-induced lifelong hearing loss.

"The transition to BAU routine clinical service at UHS is a key milestone in driving wider scale adoption of our MT-RNR1 genetic test in the UK," Dr Gino Miele, CEO of genedrive plc.

Funding for PALOH-UK sites is provided by the Office for Life Sciences and the NIHR and is due to end by June 2026, and genedrive said it is in active discussions with other PALOH-UK hospitals to support embedding the test into routine practice.
