North Yorkshire committee minded not to approve Europa's Cloughton well plan

Europa Oil & Gas said North Yorkshire Council's planning committee on 24 April was minded not to approve its plan for a Burniston well on the Cloughton prospect despite a positive recommendation from the council's planning officers.

Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) (AIM:EOG), the AIM‑quoted oil and gas company, said the committee's position directly contradicts the council planning department's endorsement and that the final recommendation now awaits the Secretary of State's ruling on whether an environmental screening assessment is required.

The company noted it had voluntarily completed and submitted an environmental screening assessment as part of the planning application.

Europa said it was disappointed with the committee decision and intends to appeal once the Secretary of State issues the screening recommendation.

"We shall appeal the decision and remain of the view that the well can be safely and efficiently delivered and is in the best interests both of the local community and the country," William Holland, Chief Executive Officer, said.

Europa added the application was supported by 13 expert reports and pointed to the Wressle development, approved on appeal, as evidence local opposition can dissipate once a site is well managed.

The company will proceed with an appeal after the Secretary of State has decided on the need for the environmental screening assessment.
