4basebio expands DNA manufacturing for personalised medicine

4basebio (AIM:4BB) expanded its DNA manufacturing offering to support production of starting material for personalised mRNA medicines.

The AIM-listed company, which specialises in synthetic DNA manufacturing for next-generation genomic medicines and advanced therapies, said the upgrade to its Cambridge-based high quality (HQ) and current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) operations cuts turnaround times and enables smaller, patient-specific batch sizes with rapid batch release.

"Personalised medicine places a very different set of demands on manufacturing than traditional biologics, including shorter turnaround times, smaller batch sizes, and zero tolerance for variability between batches," said Chief Operating Officer Scott Lorimer.

Chief Executive Dr Amy Walker said traditional plasmid DNA was "never designed" for small personalised medicine batches, carrying time delays, added costs and contamination risks, while the company's cell-free synthetic DNA platform produces a high-purity template on a timeline of weeks rather than months.

The announcement follows last month's news that Moderna and Merck's personalised mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, succeeded in a Phase 3 trial for high-risk melanoma, the first positive late-stage trial for an individualised mRNA cancer vaccine.

The global personalised cancer vaccine market was valued at approximately $200 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $1.4 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research.

4basebio's Cambridge sites include custom-built cleanrooms for HQ and cGMP operations alongside research-use-only facilities for pre-clinical work.
