American Airlines is to equip more than 500 aircraft with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, becoming the latest carrier to bet that fast in-flight connectivity has become a key battleground in the race for premium passengers.

The US airline said it would begin installing Starlink Wi-Fi on more than 500 narrow-body Airbus planes from early 2027, covering domestic and short-haul international routes. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The agreement deepens Starlink’s growing foothold in the aviation industry as airlines scramble to improve onboard internet speeds that have long frustrated travellers. Rivals including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Emirates have already signed deals with SpaceX’s satellite broadband arm.

American Airlines said the rollout would include Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft, with the service offered free to members of its AAdvantage loyalty programme.

Broader implications

  • Passenger Experience: The upgrade promises an “at-home level” of connectivity, reducing lag and enabling seamless streaming and work during flights.
  • Market Impact: SpaceX’s Starlink continues to gain traction in aviation, strengthening its position ahead of a planned IPO.
  • Fleet Strategy: While Airbus narrowbodies are prioritized, American’s Boeing fleet will remain with existing providers for now.

What it means for Starlink

Starlink uses thousands of low-earth orbit satellites, allowing lower latency and faster download speeds than traditional geostationary satellite systems used by many airlines. According to data cited by The Verge, Starlink-powered flights recorded median download speeds of more than 150 Mbps, more than double some rival systems.

The expansion also highlights how Elon Musk’s SpaceX is extending its influence beyond launch services and rockets into mainstream communications infrastructure. Starlink has become one of the company’s fastest-growing businesses ahead of a widely anticipated initial public offering.
